Short summary
Scientific field work is an expensive and time consuming teaching method is the scientific community. A survey among former participants of a hydrological Master excursion to Iceland, organized by Wageningen University (the Netherlands) showed that real excursions have a long lasting impact on the scientific development of students, in contrast to virtual excursions. As quoted by one of the participants: "You can learn a lot in a classroom, but an excursion makes you remember".
